Nicotine Vaccine To Stop Smoking

This vaccine could no longer makes smokers addicted to smoking.

Why it's hard to stop the smoking habit? The answer is because nicotine, a substance contained in tobacco. In fact, drug experts said that quitting smoking is more difficult than to refrain from the temptation of heroin, because tobacco addiction can make people naturally.

Therefore, the National Institutes of Health, U.S., revealed that a vaccine is found to fight the addiction to nicotine.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse, a national health care division, giving the Prophet BioPharmaceuticals budget of $ 10 million to build and test an anti-nicotine vaccine, called NicVAX. The experts want to know its effectiveness, monitor side effects, and compare with other therapies to stop smoking. With the aim of this vaccine could be used safely. This test has been conducted since a few weeks ago, and is awaiting permission from the Food supply and Drug Administration, USA.

American Cancer Bonding reported that 44 million smokers in the U.S., 70 percent said want to stop smoking. Approximately 40% quit smoking every year, but only 4-7 percent of who managed to quit without any assistance.

NicVAX created to stimulate the immune system to create antibodies to inhibit nicotine into the brain. Stuck outside the brain makes nicotine molecule can not trigger the craving to continue to smoke.

Another challenge to be faced is when smokers relapse (smoking again after quitting). Thus, experts expect this vaccine in addition to preventing addiction, can also make people not want to smoke again.

The result, testing performed on the 1000 is quite promising and has fewer side effects. Prophet BioPharmaceuticals respondents reported that 35 persons given the vaccine has been successfully stopped smoking, compared with 10 percent of respondents are given a placebo.
